We’re giving biodiversity the microphone
Biodiversity loss and climate change are the two biggest crises of our time.
In order to fight climate change, we need to limit global warming to 1.5℃ compared to pre-industrial levels and become carbon-neutral by 2050. I know this. You know this. The 1.5℃ target is as much a global goal as it is a household one.
But what many people don’t know is we must also transition to nature-positive systems by 2030.
Human activities are destroying nature faster than it can replenish itself. Deforestation in the Amazon is changing the region’s weather patterns from wet to dry, leaving trees desiccated and unable to absorb as much carbon. The ‘lungs of the planet’ absorb less than half as much carbon dioxide as they did 20 years ago.
This is just one example of catastrophic biodiversity loss speeding up climate change and pushing our ecosystems beyond reversible limits. We need to halt and reverse nature loss and we need to do it this decade. By 2023, nature must visibly and measurably be on the path of recovery. The fate of our species, and all species, depends on it.
Biodiversity loss and climate change: both crises are global, critical and time-bound. And yet, far fewer people talk about biodiversity. It’s a worrying oversight — and one we hope this newsletter will go a small way to rectifying.
Nature-Positive Notes is our way of handing the microphone to biodiversity.
This monthly newsletter will inform you about nature-positive news, concepts, projects and research. It’s your golden ticket to understanding this evolving, critical and fascinating space.
But Nature-Positive Notes isn’t intended to be a one-way dialogue. We want to hear from you if you find something inspiring, frustrating or amusing.
And if you’re working on a nature-positive project of your own, please email us, and tell us all about it.
Without further ado, welcome to the conversation.
